Dolpo region is a high altitude region situated in the upper part of the Dolpa district of western Nepal. Dolpo region is bordered in the north by the Tibet Autonomous Region in China. Part of the region lies in the Shey Phoksundo National Park. The Dolpo region is geographically part of the sedimentary Tibetan Tethys zone. The best known of the many isolated high Himalayan valleys across northern Nepal, Dolpo preserves one of the last remnants of traditional Tibetan culture. It is said to be one of the hidden valleys created by Guru Rinpoche during the hard times according to the legend. 
The remote region has preserved its Tibetan culture in fairly pure form, making it attractive to the westerners. Dolpo was the location for the 1999 Oscar nominated film Himalaya, and more recently for the German Documentary Dolpo Tulku.Inspite of the near accessibility of the region and tourism restrictions for the more remote parts, Dolpo is a popular destination for trekking. 
The people of Dolpo are mainly of Tibetan origin whose lives revolve around Buddhism, barley, and yaks. The majority on settlements is over 4,260 meters and is among the highest settlements on earth. The park shelters blue sheep, Himalayan black bear, leopards, wolves and the elusive snow leopard. During your trek you may be lucky enough to see some of these endangered species.
